Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) Medication

Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is a medication used to treat blood clots from forming within the lungs. From a medical standpoint, it is categorized as an anticoagulant, or blood thinner, which has the purpose of thinning the blood in order to prevent dangerous blood clogging.

Xarelto medication also has been commonly prescribed to stop deep vein thrombosis (“DVT”), a problem that can lead to pulmonary embolism, or blood clots in the lungs. DVT has been an issue in post-surgery situations, including patients who have had ankle, knee, and hip surgery. Moreover, Xarelto medication has been prescribed to patients experiencing heart rhythm disorders, or atrial fibrillation, in order to decrease the risk of stroke due to blood clots.

Patients should be aware of the problems of Xarelto when compared to Warfarin. Specifically, Warfarin has an emergency antidote that is used to stop excessive bleeding. Unfortunately, Xarelto has no emergency antidote, and cannot be purged from the body via dialysis. Thus, Xarelto’s side effects can be lethal.

Below is a list of Medications that have demonstrated an adverse reaction to Xarelto:

  • Ritonavir (Norvir)
  • Indinavir (Crixivan)
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • Phenobarbital (Solfoton)
  • Lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra)
  • Itraconazole (Onmel, Sporanox)
  • Phenytoin (Dilantin-125, Dilantin)
  • Rifampin (Rifater, Rifamate, Rimactane, Rifadin)
  • Carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Equetro, Tegretol, Tegretol-XR, Teril, Epitol)

Xarelto Medication Lawsuits: Legal Options and Potential Compensation

Xarelto Medication Lawsuits have been filed by patients who have ingested Xarelto and experienced irreversible bleeding. Moreover, Xarelto Lawsuits also been filed by relatives of loved ones who have taken Xarelto and subsequently died. The objective of these cases is to get compensation for emotional trauma, injuries, and medical bills. Significantly, Xarelto would have to be deemed the cause of death. Another blood thinning drug – Pradaxa – has been the source of lawsuits due to issues with uncontrolled bleeding and fatalities. Pradaxa was also prescribed to lower the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, the most prominent type of heart rhythm problem. $650 million was spent by the manufacturer of Pradaxa to settle approximately 4,000 claims.

Xarelto Lawsuits Suggest Pharmaceuticals Misrepresented the Drug’s Safety

Medical Companies have an obligation to warn the public about the dangers caused by the medications they manufacture, market, and distribute. A common thread of many Xarelto lawsuits is the assertion that Johnson & Johnson and Bayer breached their obligation by not warning the public about the uncontrolled bleeding caused by Xarelto. Critical in these suits is that the pharmaceutical companies knew about the lethal problems Xarelto caused while pushing the drug to doctors.
