Philips CPAP and BiPAP Machines Linked to Cancer

CPAP breathing machines help to keep your airway open while you sleep by providing a continuous stream of air through a mask. The machine is usually prescribed for people with obstructive sleep apnea to ensure they keep breathing during sleep. Similarly, BiPAP machines also assist with breathing by pushing air into the lungs. Many of these machines contain an insulating foam to reduce the sound and vibration of the device. Recently, Philips admitted that the polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam used in their CPAP and BiPAP machines may actually break down, potentially exposing the user to dangerous chemicals and particles.

The Recall

Philips has received several complaints regarding the presence of black debris. Particles within the airpath circuit, which extends from the device outlet all the way through the tubing and to the mask itself. Philips has also received reports of headache, upper airway irritation, cough, chest pressure and sinus infection.

Health Hazards Posed by Toxic Foam in CPAP & BiPAP Machines

The gases released from the broken down foam may be toxic or carry an increased risk of cancer. When the foam degrades it can also emit small particles that irritate the users airway as well. This process may also be worse in hot or humid regions.

Exposure to toxic PE-PUR foam can cause:

  • headaches and/or dizziness;
  • eye, nose, skin and respiratory tract irritation;
  • nausea and/or vomiting;
  • coughing or trouble breathing; or
  • new or worsening asthma.

These issues can result in serious injury, which can be life-threatening, cause permanent impairment, or require medical intervention to prevent permanent damage. To date, there have been no reports of death as a result of these issues.
